Thinking Ecologies Workshop
A one-day workshop for facilitators, educators and experience designers
Tuesday 29 September 2026 • 9:00 - 16:00 • Garden Library at Bothy Gardens, SN4 0FX • 8 places only
What if the environment could do some of the facilitating or teaching for you?
We spend enormous amounts of time designing agendas, activities, and content, while paying surprisingly little attention to the physical conditions in which all that thinking will take place. I believe the physical world shapes thought.
This intimate one-day pilot workshop explores what happens when we deliberately design space, objects, play, nature and visual thinking into the experience itself.
This isn't a workshop on how to facilitate. It sits before and around facilitation.
We'll explore how to set up the space and create a welcome language before anyone even arrives, how to read a room, create different modes for thinking, use objects as thinking partners, design transitions and movement, make thinking visible, invite participation without forcing it, and build a day that leaves people energised rather than exhausted.
And we'll do it inside the still-evolving Garden Library at Bothy Gardens, itself a live experiment in how physical environments can support thinking, learning and connection.
You won't spend the day sitting and listening. We will move, make, rearrange, test, notice and redesign.
You will leave with:
a way of reading the physical environment
ways to use everyday objects and metaphors to make thinking visible
ideas for designing participation that doesn't rely only on speaking
techniques for creating purposeful transitions and sustaining energy
a redesigned physical-thinking experience of your own, ready to test
A set of Think with Things Business Catalyst card decks to continue experimenting after the day
This day is for facilitators, educators, learning designers, trainers and experience designers who already know something about bringing people together and want to explore the layer that is so often overlooked:
The environment itself.
8 people only. Small enough for us to experiment properly, work on your own real projects and learn from one another.
Founding workshop price: £275
The Garden Library is still unfinished. You are being invited into the work while it is being made, not after all the questions have been answered.
Come ready to think with the room, the objects, the garden and each other.
